Polaroid Abandons Instant Photography

By Patrick J. Lyons, New York Times

INSERT DESCRIPTIONIn happier times: Polaroid’s 1970s-80s television ads featuring James Garner and Mariette Hartley wisecracking and needling one another were widely admired and imitated.

It was a wonder in its time: A camera that spat out photos that developed themselves in a few minutes as you watched. You got to see them where and when you took them, not a week later when the prints came back from the drugstore.

But in a day when nearly every cellphone has a digital camera in it, “instant” photography long ago stopped being instant enough for most people. So today, the inevitable end of an era came: Polaroid is getting out of the Polaroid business.

The company, which stopped making instant cameras for consumers a year ago and for commercial use a year before that, said today that as soon as it had enough instant film manufactured to last it through 2009, it would stop making that, too. Three plants that make large-format instant film will close by the end of the quarter, and two that make consumer film packets will be shut by the end of the year, Bloomberg News reports.

The company, which will concentrate on digital cameras and printers, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2001 and was acquired by a private investment company in 2005. It started in 1937 making polarized lenses for scientific and military applications, and introduced its first instant camera in 1948.

The Lede remembers fondly how magical it was to watch the image gradually manifest itself from the chemical murk right there in your hand. But truth be told, the Lede’s own scuffed Polaroid SX-70 camera, which used to get regular use in all manner of situations, from producing a quick step-by-step primer on how to do the Ickey Shuffle to documenting a problem with a house he was buying that cropped up the day before the closing, hasn’t come out of its cabinet drawer in years.

Loyal users take heart, though — Polaroid said it would happily license the technology to other manufacturers should they want to go on supplying the niche market with film after 2009.

The odd-shaped crossover, an instant success when it debuted a decade ago, will take its place in corporate annals as a daring design move that paid off with more than 1.3M in sales for what could have been a niche vehicle.

Getting a stylish handle on things
As an element of design, door and cabinet hardware pieces often get the short shrift. Utilitarian, to be sure, they function as a means to open a drawer or door. And sometimes, on modern cabinetry, they’re no-shows: A touch-latch mechanism provides the way in.

What’s a good unique visitor per month # for a small, niche biz-to-biz website?

Question by kathiefitzg: What’s a good unique visitor per month # for a small, niche biz-to-biz website?
In trying to measure website effectiveness, what’s a healthy number of unique visitors per month for a small business-to-business, niche market website?

Best answer:

Answer by G N A
You use month-to-month, or day-to-day tracking. There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ number you can use. All businesses have different metrics and it takes accurate tracking to get them.

The way to do it is take whichever way you are going to measure, daily or monthly and use the first day/month as your base-line number.

Let’s say day one you received 10 unique visitors. That’s your base-line to track what your numbers are over a period of say a month. Tracking using your baseline number let’s you see if a specific day of the week, time of the day, etc. brings more traffic.

While you’re at it, you’ll also be tracking the advertising you’re using to get the traffic.

Most marketers use a monthly metric because it’s not as tedious as doing this every day – unless you are really bored.

Knowing what marketing tactics are bringing you the traffic, which sources are bringing targeted traffic and which aren’t is also a part of it.

Have fun.

How to deal with office copy cat? its taking over my life.?

niche clips
by Marshall Astor – Food Pornographer

Question by jAtTi pRiNcEsS: How to deal with office copy cat? its taking over my life.?
Over the past 20 years I have self-established myself as a fashion designer who is successful. My business is small, but it caters to a particular niche in Toronto. Recently, my worker (i have few as my warehouse is small) has started copying the way i dress. From the highlights in my hair, to the way i put a clip to add volume. I don’t mind if she had highlights but the fact that she added a clip freaks me out because we look like twins, even though she is in her early 20s and younger than me. Also, she copies my sense of dressing…It has been going on for a few months but lately it has bothered me a lot. I am in contact with her almost every part of the day as she is my front staff… and now i find myself hiding away in my office on the phone shaking and trembling throughout the day trying to avoid her. I bring my paperwork home at night because i can’t do it in the office…This worker has been with me for about a year now..and i can’t find good help. I tried to think of a way to tell her lightly or jokingly about how it bothers me SOO much how we looks alike but I feel its so sensitive for me I might break down or lose my diginity. Someone please help this is affecting my confidence.

Don’t forget – imitation is the most sincere form of flattery! Take it as a compliment!

If it is as bad as you say, which I dno’t doubt, I find it annoying after awhile too, just sit down and have a little chat with her. Explain that it’s a bit irritating (maybe try to pick a less harsh word) that she’s dressing exactly like you and you find that it impacts your work performance. Tell her that you don’t mind if she dresses like that out of the office, but tell her that you would prefer she didn’t wear clothes like that to work.

You could also just create a uniform/dress code that would inhibit her ability to copy you for all of your employees, and that way you could avoid confrontation.

Q&A: What is the difference between an ecosystem and an ecological niche?

Date July 4, 2010

Question by simply me: What is the difference between an ecosystem and an ecological niche?
For a biology project, each student had to choose a species. Two of the categories we are to describe are ecosystem and ecological niche. I’m just not sure what the difference is.

Best answer:

Answer by SameerS
The ecosystem is including all of the biotic (living) factors like animals, and insects, etc… It also includes the abiotic (nonliving) factors, like sunlights, water, weather. The ecosystem is made of these two groups and how they all interact with each other in a region.
The ecological niche is a species’ or an organism’s role in the community. It is like a factory. Everything is the ecosystem, but there are people who have different jobs. These are the niches.
What you have to remember is that there is competition between organisms in the same niche. When applying for a factory job, those who want the same job are competing, but they won’t affect the people applying for another position in the factory.
The same thing happens in the different niches. There can be organisms of different niches on the same tree. Birds could be on one tree at the top, while squirrels could be in another and live in the middle. There isn’t any competition between them even though they are sharing the same tree.
